■ Restock Information

The Katakuchi Matcha Bowl and Takayama Chasen included in this kit have proven incredibly popular. Because each piece is carefully handcrafted by artisans, production is limited, and we are currently unable to meet demand. While we can't confirm an exact restock date, we anticipate the next restock around MID - JULY.

At YUGEN, we offer a curated matcha selection tailored to every occasion—from formal Usucha and Koicha to everyday use. In addition to the traditional chasen method, you can also easily enjoy an authentic matcha latte at home using a standard whisk or frother. While waiting for the kit, we invite you to explore our matcha lineup to find the perfect fit for your lifestyle.

Contents

◆ Katakuchi Matcha Bowl
◆ Takayama Chasen (Black Bamboo Whisk or White Bamboo Whisk)
◆ Chashaku (Smoked Bamboo or White Bamboo)
◆ Matcha #1 YUGEN Original Blend (30g)

*Please note that the Katakuchi Matcha Bowl may have areas where the glaze appears slightly purplish, as well as small surface bumps or firing marks. These are not defects, but natural characteristics of the pottery and part of each piece’s unique character. We kindly ask for your understanding before purchase.

This original kit features a carefully curated selection of tea utensils, designed to bring a quiet moment of tea into your daily life. Crafted in collaboration with Mashiko-yaki artisans, the Katakuchi (spouted) Matcha Bowl is meticulously shaped to help even beginners whisk matcha beautifully. It features the ideal depth and curvature to prevent splashing during vigorous whisking, along with a clay texture that protects the delicate bamboo tines of the chasen. Supported by this reliable foundation, the flexibility of the traditional Takayama chasen is fully maximized, making it easy to create a fine, creamy foam.

The true charm of the Katakuchi lies in its effortless usability—whether you are enjoying the whisked matcha straight from the bowl or gently pouring it over ice or into milk. The spout ensures a steady stream, making the act of transferring matcha to another vessel seamless and elegant. Included is Matcha #1, a blend that harmonizes a rich aroma, refined umami, and a delicate hint of astringency. It adapts beautifully to both usucha (thin tea) and lattes, ensuring an authentic and deeply satisfying matcha experience however you choose to enjoy it.

※The fine lines visible on the inside of the Katakuchi Matcha Bowl are not cracks, but a feature known as *kannyu*, which appears on the surface of the glaze due to the difference in shrinkage between the clay body and the glaze after firing, and is not a defect or damage, but rather a natural characteristic of the piece, so please feel assured that you can use it with confidence.

【How to Make an Authentic Matcha Latte】

■ Ingredients (for 1 serving)

・Matcha: 3~4 g
・Hot water (80°C / 176°F): 50 ml
・Milk: 150 ml (such as cow’s milk, soy milk, or oat milk)
・Sugar: to taste

■ Instructions

1. Sift the matcha (preparation)

Because matcha can easily form lumps due to static, it is important to sift it beforehand for a smooth finish. You may sift it just before use, or prepare a larger amount in advance and store it in an airtight container.

2. Prepare a concentrated matcha base

Place the matcha and hot water in a katakuchi matcha bowl, then whisk well with a bamboo whisk until a fine foam forms. Add the sugar afterward.

*If you do not have a bamboo whisk, add the matcha, sugar, and hot water to a cup and mix thoroughly with a whisk until no lumps remain.

3. Add the milk

Pour warm milk into the cup, or pour cold milk over ice in a glass, then add the matcha base from Step 2. Stir gently to combine.

■ Tips for a Better Cup

The texture of the latte changes depending on the amount of foam you create when preparing the matcha base. More foam gives it a light, creamy finish, while less foam allows the tea’s clean character to come through more clearly. Adjust the sweetness and foam to suit your taste.

■ Takayama Chasen: A 500-Year Tradition

The fine foam and smooth texture are brought to life by the Takayama Chasen, a traditional bamboo whisk carrying over 500 years of history from Takayama, Nara.

Skilled artisans split and shave a single piece of bamboo to extreme thinness by touch alone. Because every step is meticulous handwork, our monthly supply is naturally limited. However, this unmatched flexibility—impossible for machines to replicate—elevates the tea's flavor, proving its worth as an authentic, lifelong tool.

The natural feel of the bamboo and the quiet, brushing sound against the bowl create a deeply calming moment—an experience only a carefully crafted tool can provide.

Uji Matcha Series

We offer four varieties, from #0 to #3. The higher the number, the finer the grade—bitterness becomes more mellow, while umami and sweetness deepen. The aroma grows richer, and the color becomes more vibrant.
