Atsushi Shimomura / 下村 淳
Trained at Ryutagama, a kiln that embodies the tradition of Karatsu ware, before becoming independent.
Shimomura’s work is marked by simplicity and the warmth of handcraft. Plates often bear meato, the marks left from stacking pieces in the kiln, adding a rustic charm unique to handmade ceramics. Each piece shows individuality through hakeme (brushstroke) patterns, freehand-painted designs, or black brushwork that gains a silvery sheen through double firing.
While rooted in traditional techniques, his work pursues a refined simplicity that naturally complements everyday life.
