■ About Restocking the Kit

The Katakuchi Matcha Bowl and Takayama Chasen in this kit have received far more interest than we expected. Both are finished by hand, one at a time, by craftspeople, so production is limited and supply has not been able to keep up with demand.

So that you can enjoy matcha at home while you wait for the kit, YUGEN offers matcha for different uses, from authentic usucha (thin tea) and koicha (thick tea) suited to a formal tea gathering, to matcha for easy everyday enjoyment. Please choose the one that suits you.

Besides whisking with a chasen, you can use a stirrer or whisk you already have at home and combine it with milk for a matcha latte. If you like, please take a look at our matcha lineup.

Contents
◆ Katakuchi Matcha Bowl (YUGEN Original)
◆ Takayama Chasen, Black Bamboo (Shin) or Takayama Chasen, White Bamboo
◆ Chashaku (tea scoop), Smoked Bamboo or White Bamboo
◆ Matcha #1 YUGEN Original Blend (30g)

*Please note that the Katakuchi Matcha Bowl may have areas where the glaze appears slightly purplish, as well as small surface bumps or firing marks. These are not defects, but natural characteristics of the pottery and part of each piece's unique character. We kindly ask for your understanding before purchase.

An original kit of carefully chosen tea tools, made to bring a quiet moment of tea into your daily life. The katakuchi (spouted) matcha bowl, made together with Mashiko-ware craftspeople, is carefully designed so that even beginners can whisk matcha beautifully. Its depth and curve keep the tea from splashing back even when you whisk briskly, and its clay surface is gentle on the fine bamboo tines. With this steady base, the suppleness of the traditional Takayama chasen comes through fully, making it easy to create a fine, creamy foam.

Whether you drink the whisked matcha straight from the bowl or pour it gently over ice or into milk, the katakuchi is easy to handle. The spout keeps the flow steady, so moving matcha to another vessel is neat and simple. Matcha #1 balances a rich aroma, refined umami, and a light astringency, and suits both usucha (thin tea) and lattes. However you drink it, you can taste the true character of matcha.

*The fine lines visible inside the katakuchi matcha bowl are not cracks but kannyu (crazing). They form on the glaze surface after firing because the clay body and the glaze shrink at different rates. This is not damage or a defect but part of the bowl's character, so you can use it with confidence.

【How to Make an Authentic Matcha Latte】

■ Ingredients (for 1 serving)

・Matcha: 3-4g
・Hot water (85°C / 185°F): 55ml
・Milk: 140ml (cow's milk, soy milk, oat milk, etc.)
・Sugar: to taste, if you like

■ Instructions

① Sift the matcha (before you start)

Matcha clumps easily because of static and other factors, so sifting it in advance through a tea strainer is the key to a smooth finish. You can sift it right before use, or sift a larger amount at once and keep it in a storage container.

② Make a concentrated matcha base

Put the sifted matcha and hot water into the katakuchi bowl and whisk with the chasen.

*If you add sugar, put in the matcha and hot water first and whisk, then add the sugar, or add it directly to the milk.

③ Combine with milk

Pour warmed milk, or cold milk into a glass with ice, then add the matcha base from step ②. Stir gently to combine.

■ Tips for a Better Cup

The amount of foam you make in step ② changes the latte's texture considerably. Whisk generously with the chasen for a light, creamy finish, or keep the foam low to taste the tea's crisp character more directly. Adjust the sweetness and foam to make the cup your own.

■ Takayama Chasen: 500 Years of Tradition

The fine foam and smooth texture come from the Takayama chasen, made in Takayama, Nara, where the craft has been handed down for more than 500 years, since the Muromachi period.

A skilled craftsperson splits a single piece of bamboo, shaves the tines extremely thin by the feel of the fingertips alone, and weaves them into shape. Because every step is delicate handwork, the number we can offer each month is inevitably limited. Yet the supple spring that machine production cannot reach is what lifts the flavor of the tea, and what makes it a genuine tool you can use for years.

The feel of the bamboo in your hand, and the faint, quiet sound of the whisk brushing the bottom of the bowl. A calm, settling moment that only a carefully made tool can offer.

Uji Matcha Series

We offer four varieties, from #0 to #3. The higher the number, the finer the grade—bitterness becomes more mellow, while umami and sweetness deepen. The aroma grows richer, and the color becomes more vibrant.
