Now based in Yoichi, Hokkaido, Mawatari creates everyday ceramics using locally sourced clay, allowing the natural character of the land to come through in each piece.

One of the distinctive features of his work is a glaze made from applewood ash collected from local orchards in Yoichi and rice straw ash. By thoughtfully incorporating materials rooted in the region, he creates subtle variations in color and texture, giving each piece its own unique character and a warm, earthy presence.
