【 Artist Profile 】

Artist : Atsushi Ogata
Origin : Nara, Japan
Medium : Ceramics

1960 Born in Tokyo, Japan
1966 Graduated from Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Technical High School
1998 Established his own studio in Seto, Aichi
2007 Built a kiln in the mountains of Uda, Nara

Now based in the rural mountains of Uda, Nara, Ogata creates ceramics known for their distinctive surface pattern of fine crackles, a signature technique he developed known as Shirohibite.
These delicate crackle patterns, reminiscent of sharkskin, emerge naturally during firing as the glaze contracts, giving each piece a unique and intricate texture.

He uses raw, unrefined clay without removing impurities, allowing natural variations in tone and texture to emerge in the finished work.
This combination of softly crackled surfaces and earthy, subdued colors results in ceramics that feel both grounded and expressive.

His work has been exhibited extensively across Europe and Asia, where it continues to receive high acclaim for its originality and craftsmanship.
